Organizational systems for nesting and new mothers

One of the trickiest parts of being pregnant is the nesting instinct that kicks in towards the end. You’re exhausted and unwieldy, and yet consumed by the need to take a toothbrush to the floorboards. You can’t stand the undirected nervous energy, but the floorboards are a bit hard to reach and family members tend to scold you for scrubbing on your hands and knees.

The best way to deal with the strange urges that come from nesting is to channel the energy into something legitimately productive – something that prepares your home for your new little one. One of the most important things that needs attention before a birth is the new baby’s wardrobe. All of the baby’s clothes and blankets need to be washed before they can be used, and they all also need to be organized in some way.

Baby clothes are tiny and adorable and, as such, easy to become cluttered. Tiny things don’t stay in piles well, and when you rifle through them they become balled up very easily. If they are organized well, you won’t have to rifle through them as much and you will have a much easier system.

Because baby clothes are so small, you can fit a lot into a drawer. One easy organizational system is to dedicate each drawer in your dresser to a particular size of clothing: newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months, etc. Within the drawers, stack clothes together: all pajamas on one side, pants together, and onesies stacked into two neat little piles, one for short sleeves and one for long. You will be able to reach into the drawer and quickly pull out exactly what you’re looking for, which is very important when you’re operating on little sleep and trying to get through the dressing portion of the day with minimal stress.

Organizational systems are key to making it through the first months of new motherhood with your sanity intact. If you start with one good system it can spread to other areas and significantly decrease your stress level, leaving you free to adore your newest little love.
